Go Solo – Juliette Girl Scouts

Juliette Girl Scouts or Juliettes for short, are individually registered Girl Scouts (IRG) who are not affiliated with a troop. Think of the Juliettes as an independent study for Girl Scouts. They have the flexibility to mix and match activities that match their interests by choosing special events, leadership projects, travel opportunities, camp, community service, Fall and Cookie Programs, and badges that appeal to them.

Joining as a Juliette is great for Girl Scouts without a troop available nearby or for those who want to enjoy Girl Scout programming with their family or mentor at their own pace. They can get started right away by earning badges independently or attending events to meet other Girl Scouts in their area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be a Girl Scout without being part of a troop? Yes! Earn badges, go camping, and more on your own schedule. These types of Girl Scout members are known as Juliettes, named after our founder, Juliette Gordon Low. Like her, Juliettes blaze their own trail as an alternative pathway to a traditional troop setting in Girl Scouts. Juliettes choose how to participate based on their schedule and interests.

How do I become a Juliette? First register and transfer into the Juliette status. The process varies slightly if you are currently a member or if you are joining Girl Scouts for the first time. Expand to learn more.

Currently a member? Submit the troop member change form:

Girl Scouts currently in a troop should submit the Troop/Member Change Form to request a transfer from their current troop to Juliette status. On the form, in the New Troop field enter “Juliette”. Once the transfer has been completed, they will be listed as IRG the system’s term for Individually Registered Girl Scout (or Juliette).

How often do they meet? Juliettes do not attend troop meetings but instead build their own participation schedule around their interests and needs. Together with the guidance of a caregiver or another adult mentor, Juliettes can work on badges, go to camp, and attend programs and events.

How does the Juliette program work? Girl Scouts is “girl-led,” so Juliettes work with their caregivers or their Juliette Mentor to choose badges to earn and activities to attend. It is Girl Scouts customized for one—together, you set the schedule, the pace, and the skills to grow. You’ve got the freedom to follow her lead when she wants to know more—even after the badge is done!

What do Juliettes do? Juliettes can do anything Girl Scouts in a troop can do! Juliettes learn to Discover, Connect, and Take-Action when they (expand to learn more):

Attend programs and events

Juliettes can meet other Girl Scouts by attending council, volunteer, or partner run events, programs and camps. Check our event calendar for our current offerings.

Local Girl Scout communities, or service units, may also host events and are a great way Juliettes can meet other Girl Scouts in their area.

Earn badges and learn new skills

Juliettes build skills and explore new interests as they earn badges across Girl Scouts’ four program pillars: STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), Life Skills, Outdoors, and Entrepreneurship.  Girl Scout handbooks and badge pamphlets provide helpful guidance for supporting your Juliette in earning badges. Badges, handbooks, and badge pamphlets can be purchased online or at your local shop.

Step into their leadership journey

The Girl Scout Highest Awards are the most prestigious awards a Girl Scout can earn. Through these meaningful, youth-led projects, Juliettes grow as changemakers identifying issues in their communities, creating thoughtful action plans, and leading sustainable projects that create lasting impact.

We have the Bronze Award for Juniors, the Silver Award for Cadettes, and the Gold Award for Seniors and Ambassadors. Juliette Girl Scouts can also earn Leadership Awards as they practice ways they can lead themselves, their team, and their community.

Take part in a community service project

Part of the Girl Scout Law is to “make the world a better place.” Juliettes can work on their own or with their Girl Scout community to carry out this Girl Scout tradition.

They can also participate in a National Service Project or earn a Leadership Award by mentoring younger Girl Scouts at troop meetings, events, camp, and more.

Travel with Girl Scout Destinations

Juliettes in grades 6th grade and up, can experience leadership opportunities and cross- cultural understanding through regional, national, and international travel. Explore Girl Scout Destinations and other ways to travel

Adventure at Camp

Looking for outdoor adventures? Juliettes can attend any of our council or volunteer run camps! From local day camps to unforgettable overnight experiences, plus whole-family camp options, there’s something for everyone to explore.

Camp is thoughtfully designed so every camper can shine as their own unique self. It’s the perfect place to build confidence, try new things, and connect with other Girl Scouts while enjoying the great outdoors.

Participate in our Entrepreneurship Programs

Juliettes learn great business skills including goal setting, decision making, money-management, people skills, and business ethics. They also earn council credits to off-set the cost of their Girl Scout activities. Learn More.

  • Fall Product Program is a friends and family sale where Girl Scouts sell nuts, candies, magazines, BARK boxes, and more.
  • Cookie Program where Girl Scouts sell cookies, gain entrepreneurship skills, and earn funds to power their Girl Scout Experiences.

How do Juliettes fund their experiences? Juliette Girl Scout families provide funds for special events and activities. They can also participate in our Fall Product and Cookie programs to help cover the costs of their experiences by earning Juliette Funds. These funds are housed by GSNorCal and can be used to offset the cost of the Girl Scout activities by completing the Juliette Funds Conversion Request form.

What kind of support do Juliettes receive? Juliettes navigate the Girl Scout program with their caregiver or another trusted adult, also known as their Juliette Mentor. Because Juliettes do not have a troop leader to help guide them, they rely on their mentor to help them complete badges and sign up for activities, like programs, events, and camp.

Juliette Mentors can connect with their local service unit to find out about Girl Scout events in their community. Most service units have monthly meetings, where local volunteers come together to hear about upcoming events and connect with each other.
