Volunteer Requirements

As a Girl Scout volunteer, you’ll become part of a vibrant community of dedicated individuals supporting youth throughout Northern California, and across the country!

To get started, all volunteers must be at least 18 years old, and those who plan to drive Girl Scouts must be at least 21. They also need to complete the following steps:

  1. Register as a member of Girl Scouts of Northern California.
  2. Complete a screening, which includes a criminal background check.
  3. In gsLearn (use your MyGS login credentials), complete the Mandated Reporter training, the Annual Acknowledgement, and any additional training required for your role.
    • The 636 GSNorCal Mandated Reporter Biennial Course must be taken every 2 years. It takes approximately 40-50 minutes to complete. Because this course is tailored to Girl Scouts and includes additional information about Girl Scout safety policies, we are unable to accept Mandated Reporter courses from other organizations.
    • The 636 GSNorCal Mandated Reporter Annual Acknowledgement must be signed every year. It takes approximately 1 minute to read and sign.
    • Most role trainings need to be completed once. The length of these trainings varies.
    • Please see the gsLearn FAQ page if you need further assistance with trainings or gsLearn.

These steps must be completed before supporting youth troop members in any capacity.

Please note:

You’ll need to register as a member before you can begin the fingerprinting screening/background check process.

Access to gsLearn (our online training portal) is only available once you’ve registered and assigned yourself a volunteer role in the MyGS system.
